Postcards to Voters Awarded National “Ally Spotlight” Designation by Democracy Legacy Action

Volunteer organization Postcards to Voters has been recognized as a National Ally by Democracy Legacy Action and will be highlighted in an upcoming campaign spotlighting the work of both organizations to increase voter turnout across the country.

Democracy Legacy Action is a nonprofit organization that seeks to broaden and deepen consensus around the interconnected core values of freedom, justice, and equality. Their focus for 2018 is increasing voter engagement for local, state, and federal elections. Leveraging state-of-the-art technology, Democracy Legacy Action provides action-oriented messages to citizens using social and traditional media tools.

The Ally Spotlight Program was founded to amplify the work of organizations, large and small, who are working to increase turnout, educate voters about issues and candidates, or combat voter suppression. The goal of the program is to provide both visibility and resources to those groups so that they can extend their reach and build on the momentum of political action that is currently taking place. The recipient organizations receive a national media campaign, a joint fundraising effort spearheaded by Democracy Legacy Action, as well as a direct outreach to their network asking for support.

Postcards to Voters was founded in March of 2017 by Tony McMullin as an effort to reach out to voters in close elections with friendly, handwritten notes reminding them of an upcoming election. Since its inception, the organization has grown from five volunteers from various parts of the country that McMullin met in a progressive Facebook group to a network of tens of thousands of people nationwide. In the recent special election for U.S. Senate in Alabama, Postcards to Voters reached more voters by postcards than the candidate reached going door to door.

“Postcards to Voters embodies exactly what this current political movement is all about,” says Democracy Legacy Action President Shawna Vercher. “It was founded by one American with an idea to connect with voters in a personal and meaningful way. Then it grew because thousands of individual citizens donated their time to do what they could to make a difference. It is a positive way for anyone - no matter where they live or what their background is - to reach out and genuinely connect with people.”
