Duke Energy: Coal ash reached Sutton Lake during Florence — but didn't impact water quality

The spill occurred Saturday at Duke Energy's Sutton Power Plant in Wilmington after torrential rainfall from then-Tropical Storm Florence breached the lined landfill under construction there. About 2,000 cubic yards of material moved, but most of it was trapped on site.
