Mixed Close Even As Mortgage Rates Fell

The markets closed mixed with the Dow gaining 18 points to 13,596 as record low mortgage rates tempered concerns of a global economic slowdown. Nasdaq slipped 6 points to 3175.

On the downside

Jefferies Group (NYSE: JEF) reported higher third quarter earnings but the results fell short of expectations.
CarMax (NYSE: KMX) disappointed with second quarter earnings that missed analyst estimates.
In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 3 to 2 on the NYSE and by 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks lost 4 points to 851.
