Jobless claims rise, markets open flat

Jobless claims rose more than expected last week but the markets opened flat with the Dow adding 2 points to 18,288 as crude oil prices rebounded. Nasdaq rose 8 points to 5,080.

On the upside

Shares of AVEO Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: AVEO) continued rising.

Minutes were published from the European Medicines Agency meeting when the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products recommended orphan designation for Prana Biotech's (Nasdaq: PRAN) Huntington disease treatment PBT2.

On the downside

Profit taking weighed down shares of Prima Biomed (Nasdaq: PBMD).

NetApp (Nasdaq: NTAP) disappointed with lower fourth quarter earnings and revenue that fell short of analyst expectations and forecast current quarter results below estimates prompting a downgrade.

Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL) chief executive Robert Lynch unexpectedly resigned.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 10 to 9 on the NYSE while decliners edged out advancers by nearly 5 to 4 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 added 2 points to 2128. Bitcoin rose $2 to $236.
