Lower open as China investigates brokerages

The markets opened lower with the Dow falling 41 points to 17,772 as Chinese stocks dropped amidst a China Securities Regulatory Commission investigation into brokerages. Nasdaq added 2 points to 5,119.


On the upside


Bargain hunters lifted shares of e-Future Information Technology (Nasdaq: EFUT).


KaloBios (Nasdaq: KBIO) chief executive Martin Shkreli tweeted that he would no longer lend stock to short sellers.


Shares of Macrocure (Nasdaq: MCUR) extended its gains.

On the downside


Shares of Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) fell as the Chinese government launched an investigation into three Chinese brokerages.


Disney's (NYSE: DIS) ESPN lost 3 million subscribers.


Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) stock continued to fall.


In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of nearly 7 to 5 on the NYSE and by more than 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 slipped a point to 2,087. Bitcoin rose $3 to $350.
