Luxoft Introduces the Next Generation VP9 Video Codec for 4K/UltraHD

Luxoft Holding, Inc (NYSE:LXFT), a leading provider of software development services and innovative IT solutions to a global client base, today announced the creation of its Professional VP9 Codec Software Development Kit (SDK) – the Company’s commercial version of the current reference VP9 codec from Google. A codec’s primary function is to encode or decode a digital data signal or stream.

The Company’s SDK significantly improves the balance between performance and quality of the Google codec, and increases encoding performance. Luxoft’s innovative codec is designed to help video content providers, cloud servers, and live-streaming companies produce effective, real-time 4K/UltraHD encoding and video streaming.

The Company’s codec was built with a Graphics Processing Unit-based (GPU) acceleration architecture which ensures speeds of up to 20x faster compared to products currently on the market, while also reducing the rate of power consumption. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, and other forms of personal or commercial devices to accelerate the speed of visual output.

As a result of utilizing the Khronos Group’s OpenCL™ standard, Luxoft’s version also offers a significant time-to-market advantage for today hardware architectures such as Central Processing Units, Graphics Processing Units, and heterogeneous computing systems. This SDK should be a great fit for cloud encoding and live-streaming applications. VP9 4K SDK is ready for beta evaluation.
