Wines of Garnacha Launches Its New Website

Wines of Garnacha has launched a website, WinesofGarnacha.com, devoted to the wines of five European P.D.O.s (or Protected Designation of Origin, the EU quality scheme for agricultural products produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognized know-how) located in eastern Spain (Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariñena, Somontano and Terra Alta).

Garnacha, which is better known by its French name, Grenache, is one of the world’s most widely planted varietals but usually blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre. However in these five regions, wines are made with at least eighty-five percent Garnacha. While many of Europe’s wine regions have been promoting their wines in the U.S. for years, this is the first time the P.D.O.s have come together to raise awareness and promote a particular varietal.

The website includes information on each D.O., including climate, soil and production figures. It also includes a map of worldwide Garnacha plantings and information on the particular challenges of making wine with a very high Garnacha content.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this tool to the wine trade and wine lovers in general,” says Antonio Ubide, president of the Protected Designation of Origin Cariñena, the entity that coordinates the Wines of Garnacha program. “Garnacha may be internationally popular, but it originated in our region, and we are very proud of this contribution to the world of wine.”
