Green Heart Lifestyle Releases New Information on Helping Gardeners Select Between Anvil and Bypass Pruning Shears

Green Heart Lifestyle, the Niagara Falls, NY based garden tools company, has released new information regarding the selection of the right type of pruning shears for all gardeners as a part of their 2017 gardenings and garden tools promotion campaign.

Choosing the right pruning shears can be a tricky task, especially when one’s an amateur gardener getting overwhelmed by the following options - bypass pruning shears or anvil shears.

According to the President of Green Heart Lifestyle, Aad Hermann, “Green Heart specializes in building the best pruning shears for gardening. During our product development phase for the same, all our research pointed towards the following conclusion - bypass pruning shears are the most suitable option for the vast majority of gardeners.”

Anvil pruners work similar to a knife where a blade is pushed through the plant material onto a cutting board, ie the anvil. Anvil Shears are designed for cutting through deadwood by using a crushing motion.

Only one blade is sharpened, the other flattened so that the branch is crushed against the flatter side while being cut with the knife edge. They also tend to be bulkier than bypass pruners, which makes them a lot more difficult to operate. Thus, anvil shears are best suited for cutting up dead wood only.

Bypass pruning shears, however, work like scissors with two curved blades that bypass each other for each cut. One blade is sharpened on the outside edge and it passes by a thicker, unsharpened blade. Bypass pruning shears cut stem issues with as little trauma as possible, leaving the plant stem, uncrushed.

For pruning live growth that is ⅔ - ¾ inch in diameter, this is the best tool for the job. However, they are not suitable for cutting dead wood, as the cold hard substance can jam the cutter and bend them, thus ruining these pruning shears for further use.

There also exists another kind of pruning shears called ratchet shears. These are designed like anvil shears except it is equipped with a mechanism that makes the cutting performed in stages. It is well suited for older people and for people suffering from arthritis as it reduces a lot of the pressure put on the wrists during pruning.

Ultimately, bypass pruning shears are preferred as most gardeners work on live plants and don’t require tools that cut through dead wood. To learn more about gardening, visit Green Heart Lifestyle's official website or check out their official Amazon storefront.
