Flexographic Technical Association Recognizes Tension Corporation for Excellence in Flexography

In recognition of its expertise and print quality in flexographic printing, Tension Corporation is pleased to take home four Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) 2014 Excellence in Flexography Awards, including one of only five gold awards given in the envelope category.

“This year’s judging was fierce,” said Lonnie Robinson, Director of Engineering for Tension Corporation and current chairman of the board for the FTA. “Winning any FTA award medal is a major accomplishment. Taking home a gold FTA award is a big win for Tension, as are our silver and bronze awards. They reflect the creative and skilled work of our production teams and stand as a testament to the quality envelopes we produce for our clients.”

Each year the FTA recognizes the best of the best in flexography. Nominees are judged on a combination of degree of difficulty and level of execution. Only the best rise to the top. This year, Tension took home four medals in the envelope category, more than any other category competitor. The company’s award-winning work was completed on behalf of clients in the retail, movies on demand and financial industries. Entries were reviewed using a number criteria, including consistency, ink coverage and image sharpness.

A long-time leader in print quality, Tension is known for its expertise in flexographic envelope printing. Twice a year the company holds an internal print quality competition to recognize attention to detail in printing. The winners of these internal awards are given the coveted positions of FTA award entries.

“Winning an FTA award is a prestigious honor, not only for Tension, but for our production associates. It’s the Oscars for flexographic printers,” said Bill Berkley, President and CEO of Tension Corporation. “We take great pride in exceeding our customers’ expectations and delivering award-winning work on their behalf.”

And the winners are:

  • Movies On Demand & Pay-Per-View Envelope – Gold Award; Screen, Uncoated Paper
  • Victoria’s Secret Envelope – Silver Award; Line, Uncoated Paper
  • Klein Bank Envelope – Bronze Award; Line, Uncoated Paper
  • Charter Movies on Demand Envelope – Bronze Award; Screen, Uncoated Paper

Winners in the “Line, Uncoated Paper” category demonstrated excellence in the quality of coverage for solid colors and cleanliness of type. “Printing a solid color, especially a florescent pink color like the Victoria’s Secret envelope, is very difficult,” said Robinson. “On both of Tension’s winning envelopes in this category our associates did an impressive job of laying the ink down to cover the paper fibers. They were able to hold a consistent color while maintaining the openness of the type, which contained small and difficult-to-maintain reverse lettering.”

Likewise, in the “Screen, Uncoated Paper” category, Tension’s winning envelopes showed exceptional print quality and cleanliness of the screens. “When reviewing this category, judges look for cleanliness of the screens and how well we create depth in a picture,” said Robinson. “For our Gold Award winner, Tension was able to maintain the cleanliness of several movie posters, creating depth and clean type, while using additional screens to highlight call-out boxes.”

These 2014 FTA awards continue a long line of wins for Tension. Since the early 1990s, Tension has consistently received FTA awards for its quality work and innovative designs.
