Medidata Announces Successful Resolution of Its Patent Litigation with Datatrak International

Medidata (NASDAQ:MDSO), the leading global provider of cloud-based solutions for clinical research in life sciences, today announced that it has prevailed in defending a patent lawsuit filed by Datatrak International (OTCQX:DTRK) in March 2011.

On November 6, 2015, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio declared Datatrak’s U.S. Patent No. 7,464,087 (“the ‘087 patent”) invalid and granted Medidata’s motion to dismiss Datatrak’s case in its entirety. Specifically, the Court ruled that the asserted claims of the ‘087 patent are invalid because they are directed to an abstract idea and do not constitute patentable subject matter under 35 U.S.C. § 101.

“Medidata has a tradition of developing innovative products and respects the intellectual property rights of others,” said Tarek Sherif, Medidata’s chairman and chief executive officer. “From the outset, we said that we would vigorously defend ourselves against Datatrak’s contrived charges of infringement of its invalid patent. We are pleased with Judge Gaughan’s detailed and well-reasoned decision, which reflects an appropriate resolution of this case.”
