ezDinero Announces Latino Scholarship Winner

$1000 Award Targets Hispanic Community

CHICAGO, IL, May 23, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The goal of ezDinero financial solutions is to provide greater access and opportunity to higher education for outstanding students from underrepresented backgrounds with a focus on the Latino community. The ezDinero scholarship program for promotes academic excellence.

Today ezDinero announced the 2016 recipient of the Aspire! Latino Scholarship: Walter Solorzano of Norwalk CT, who graduated in May 2015 from Duke University with a B.A. in Chemistry and a minor in Political Arts and Spanish. He will be continuing his studies at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine this Fall.

Mr. Solorzano's story is compelling: He was born in Paramount, California in 1993 to Salvadoran parents who had immigrated to the United States a few years before. He was raised with a younger brother in modest conditions in a one-bedroom apartment in Cudahy Wisconsin.

"Throughout my upbringing, my parents made sure to create a stable household that taught me humility, self-discipline and respect," Mr. Solorzano wrote in his application essay. "From an early age, my parents did a great job of demonstrating the importance of attaining an education and supporting my soccer endeavors. I learned to value my academics and dreamed of one day attaining a scholarship for college and becoming a physician."

Mr. Solorzano's academic track record is impressive: He graduated as the valedictorian of his class at John Glenn High School in 2011, after participating in various extracurricular activities and being a four year letterman on the varsity soccer team. He entered Duke University on the pre-medical track in the fall of 2011.

"After being challenged academically, culturally, and economically during my first two years, I was as motivated as ever to achieve my goals of becoming a Spanish-speaking Salvadoran physician and working in the underserved communities I was raised in."

His community work continues: " After a year of working as an Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) tutor at John Glenn High School, my alma mater, I am now three months removed from beginning my medical school education at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and being one step closer to fulfilling my dream."

More than 50 million people in the United States identify as Hispanic, making the growing Latino population by far the largest minority group in the country. Though there are continued cultural, economic, and societal barriers to educational success, students of Hispanic descent have recently made significant gains, and ezDinero would like to contribute to that momentum.
