Teens Vie For National Title at 2009 Delo Tractor Restoration Competition

Chevron’s brand of Delo lubricant has invited the country’s leading teen tractor restoration specialists to Indianapolis next month to compete in the 2009 Delo Tractor Restoration Competition (www.chevrondelotrc.com). The national event, which has become the Super Bowl of tractor restoration, will take place during the 82th National FFA Convention, held in Indianapolis, from October 21-24. Twelve competitors have been selected to compete in this year’s event.

Since 1995, the Delo Tractor Restoration Competition has rewarded the determination, mechanical skills and business savvy of high school aged FFA members from around the country. Through the restoration of an antique tractor, participants develop skills applicable to the modern business world. The skills needed for success in the program – equipment maintenance, teamwork, project management, budgeting, planning and marketing – help develop the participants into future leaders in the agriculture community.

“What these kids have accomplished is quite outstanding,” said Julian Cran, marketing manager, Chevron Global Lubricants. “It’s something their family, friends and community should be very proud of. They have restored a bit of American history and at the same time developed valuable skills they can use later in life. The Delo Tractor Restoration Competition is an event that Chevron is very proud to be part of.”

All entrants to the Delo Tractor Restoration Competition are required to submit a workbook detailing the entire tractor restoration process, from mechanical overhauls of the engine, transmission and auxiliary and ancillary systems, to the external appearance of the tractors. The 2009 entries have been narrowed down to twelve finalists. These finalists are invited to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis to present their projects to a panel of five professional tractor restorers. Projects will be graded on restoration process, results and documentation, as well as oral presentation and safety precautions. The prizes are as follows:

  • Champion: $5,000
  • Reserve Champion: $3,000
  • 3rd Place: $2,000
