Travelers Recognized by G.I. Jobs Magazine as a Top Military Friendly Employer

Travelers (NYSE: TRV) today announced that the company has been named to the highly competitive G.I. Jobs Top Military Friendly Employers List in recognition of its military-friendly hiring practices and benefits. This is the third consecutive year Travelers has been named to the list.

“We find the skills, technical knowledge, and values that individuals possess in the armed services are very applicable to the Travelers environment,” said Doreen Spadorcia, Travelers Executive Vice President & CEO of Personal Insurance and Claim Services. “Transitioning military personnel bring qualities of dedication and discipline to their roles, and we value that they readily seek and accept responsibility and challenging work.”

Travelers focuses efforts on hiring transitional military and junior military officers for positions as project and product managers within the company's Claim organization and for risk control and underwriting positions within Business Insurance and Bond and Financial Products divisions, as well as leadership roles across the company.

Melanie Bowers, the director of workforce management for the Travelers Catastrophe Response team, came to Travelers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne division where she provided logistics support. “It really is a similar job and skill set,” said Bowers. “After a catastrophe strikes, we need to be ready to transport our team and supplies to the disaster site in a timely manner so we can begin helping our customers.”

In addition to military-friendly hiring practices, Travelers is also known for excellent benefits for military personnel deployed on active duty, such as benefits continuation and leave of absence policies. In 2008 and 2009 the company was a national finalist for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their outstanding support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

“Veterans Day is an opportunity to express our gratitude and our pride in our employees who have served or are serving our country through active duty or the reserves,” said Spadorcia. “Support for our employees continuing to serve our country is simply the right thing to do.”

Ranked 28 out of 100 companies, Travelers was selected for the list out of a pool of 5,000 eligible companies (minimum of $500 million annual revenues). Criteria for the rankings include assets dedicated to military hiring, Reserve/Guard policies, percentage of veteran new hires, veteran training programs and the company’s previous three years’ rankings. The Top Military Friendly Employers List will appear in the December issue of G.I. Jobs.
