Delo® 400 LE SAE 15W-40 API CJ-4 Tested and Ready For 2010

Chevron’s Delo brand of technologically advanced engine oils, lubricants and coolants, today announced that after conducting extensive field tests since 2000 in nearly two-dozen Volvo D12C engines using Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Urea, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) – technologies expected to be widely deployed to help reduce vehicle emissions starting in 2010 – Delo® 400 LE SAE 15W-40 showed exceptional performance in the areas of durability, reliability and the reduced production of incombustible materials in the DPF. Chevron’s test findings have been published in multiple SAE papers (SAE 2009-01-1781; 2005-01-3716 and 2005-01-3575).

Tests done in engines using DPF, SCR and DEF before Delo 400 LE 15W-40 was introduced in late 2006 were conducted with a pre-API CJ-4 Delo prototype.

Since 2008, Chevron has been testing its Delo 400 LE 15W-40 in Volvo 2010 emission compliant engine technology using DPF, SCR and DEF. Multiple engines have accumulated between 130,000 to 190,000 miles of operations using the oil. Even with 30,000 - 40,000 mile drain intervals, the use of Delo 400 LE 15W-40 resulted in excellent engine durability and low levels of wear.

Testing of Delo 400 LE 15W-40 showed that the oils reduced level of sulfated ash (versus similar API CI-4 PLUS oils of the same grade) resulted in substantially less incombustibles in DPF. Lower ash levels in the DPF should result in less cleaning maintenance and potentially better fuel economy due to the lower back pressure on the exhaust.

Commenting on the strong test results, Jim McGeehan, global manager, diesel engine oil technology, Chevron Global Lubricants, said, “It is no accident that our Delo engine oils have one of the most respected reputations in the market. To assure our customers have lubricants they can rely on to run their businesses and protect their investments, we conduct extensive field and laboratory tests. In preparation for 2010, we have tested for nearly a decade. Our customers can rest assured that our Delo 400 LE 15W-40 will provide the protection needed in 2010 and pre-2010 engine technologies.”

The DPF, SCR and DEF solution will be used by most OEMs to address 2010 emission regulations - only one OEM will employ an EGR only solution. The Volvo system Chevron used for testing was a “passive” DPF, while some OEMs will deploy an “active” DPF in 2010. The two systems are basically the same.

The strong performance of Delo 400 LE 15W-40 is a result of Chevron’s proprietary ISOSYN™ Technology which combines highly refined base oils with advanced additives to create products that rival synthetic lubricants in critical performance tests while maintaining costs similar to mineral-based oils.
