Temple Grandin to Speak at Special Preview of HBO Films’ Temple Grandin

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS):

MONDAY, JANUARY 25, AT 1 P.M.
BARNES & NOBLE

150 East 86th St

New York, NY 10028

HBO and Barnes & Noble will host a special event on New York’s Upper East Side on January 25, featuring a book signing and discussion with Temple Grandin, best-selling author, animal scientist and autism advocate. The event will take place at 1:00 PM at the Upper East Side Barnes & Noble in Manhattan (150 East 86th Street at Lexington Avenue). It will include a preview from HBO Films’ moving biopic Temple Grandin, which is premiering February 6 at 8PM (ET/PT) on HBO.

Starring Claire Danes in the title role, Temple Grandin paints a picture of a young woman’s perseverance and determination while struggling with the isolating challenges of autism at a time when it was still quite unknown. The film chronicles Temple’s early diagnosis; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; and her emergence as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behavior. Grandin became an extraordinary success by using her unique connection to animals to become a doctor in animal sciences and a world-renowned consultant in the field. Grandin is also a best-selling author and internationally renowned autism advocate.

To support the autism community and celebrate the film, HBO and Barnes & Noble invite the public – especially parents, friends and advocates of individuals with autism – to this free event. Grandin will speak about her experience with autism and sign copies of her books “Thinking in Pictures” and “Emergence.”

The film is executive-produced by Emily Gerson Saines, co-founder of the Autism Coalition and an active member of the autism community. Gerson Saines’ son was diagnosed with autism when he was nearly three. She was given Grandin’s book “Thinking in Pictures” by her own mother, which helped Gerson Saines maneuver through very difficult early years and eventually became her inspiration for the film. She recalls, “When I read Temple’s book it became my singular source of hope. It allowed me to believe that my son could one day contribute something to society.”

To support the premiere and shine a spotlight on autism, Barnes & Noble will have special display tables in all 775 stores with books related to autism, Grandin’s books, and information on HBO’s film. Barnes & Noble has also created a microsite filled with resources on autism, accessible at bn.com/templegrandin.

HBO has created a free, downloadable coloring book that tells Grandin’s story through illustrations created by artists with autism. The coloring book can be downloaded through February 17 at bn.com/templegrandin. HBO will also give away printed copies of the coloring book at the January 25 event.
