Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, announced today that it collected and donated more than 1.1 million books for children in need all over the country during its 2009 Holiday Book Drive, thanks to the generous support of customers and its enthusiastic booksellers. In addition, Barnes & Noble donated another 150,000 books to students in the New Orleans School District through Reader to Reader, Inc., a non-profit organization that distributes books to schools and libraries in need, and 50,000 to Toys for Tots, which collects and distributes toys as Christmas gifts to needy children.

“The Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive could not succeed without the passion of our booksellers and generosity of our customers,” says Sarah DiFrancesco, director of Community Relations. “This is a holiday tradition for us and what a great opportunity for our stores and customers to come together to donate new books for children in the community who really need them.”

Community partners who have already begun distributing the books collected by Barnes & Noble booksellers include schools, libraries, and social service organizations. Local recipients include the New Jersey Chapter of The Pajama Program, the Title 1 Literacy Program at Metzger Elementary in Oregon, Big Brothers Big Sisters & The Ronald McDonald House in Ohio, The Children's Initiative of San Diego, YMCA of Coastal Georgia, LCRM's Maplewood Family Center in Michigan, Kids in Distress in Florida, Children's Service Society of Wisconsin, Family Alliance in Virginia, Mortarboard in New Mexico, and Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The annual Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive invites customers to purchase books for donations at Barnes & Noble bookstores all across the country between November 1, 2009 and January 1, 2010.
