Amazon Web Services Announces General Availability of AWS Import/Export for Amazon S3 – Making Large Scale Data Transfer Faster and Easier

Amazon Web Services LLC, an Amazon.com company, (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced the general availability of AWS Import/Export for Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), with a new web service interface that enables easy management of data transfers and migrations. AWS Import/Export accelerates moving large amounts of data into and out of AWS using portable storage devices for transport. For large data sets, AWS Import/Export is often significantly faster than Internet transfer and more cost effective than upgrading network connectivity. To start using AWS Import/Export, visit http://aws.amazon.com/importexport.

“Companies have used AWS Import/Export for everything from time-sensitive imports at the end of a datacenter lease, to exporting large data sets to their customers, to disaster recovery,” said Alyssa Henry, General Manager of Amazon S3. “We’re excited to make the service generally available and even easier to use.”

A few of the customers already taking advantage of AWS Import/Export include:

  • Quantivo takes customer data from some of the world’s largest companies and helps them quickly uncover valuable behavioral insights that they can use to drive more revenue. “Ramping up a new customer involves loading months or years of historical data (many terabytes), and would require weeks of data transfer over the Internet. AWS Import/Export allows our customers to transfer their data directly to Quantivo’s analytics running on Amazon Web Services. This entire process takes just a few days, and allows us to get even our largest customers up and running in less than two weeks, further increasing our value for customers,” said Paul O’Leary, CTO, Quantivo.
  • Sonian provides a comprehensive email archiving solution built on Amazon Web Services. Bringing a new customer online requires loading a customer’s existing email databases. “Prior to AWS Import/Export, our migration of historical customer data was limited by available network bandwidth. Now Sonian can quickly archive unlimited terabytes of data to the cloud,” said Greg Arnette, CTO, Sonian.
  • Open Solutions Group, Inc. (OpenSGI) uses Amazon Web Services to parallel process terabytes of geospatial data and generate results in hours instead of years. “We’ve used AWS Import/Export to deliver over 40 terabytes of results directly to our customers in a way that’s fast and convenient. Within just days our customers have disks and data in hand, and can begin modeling, analyzing, and visualizing the results of our geo-processing work,” said Brian Levy, President and CEO, Open Solutions Group, Inc.

Amazon Web Services today also announced support for Amazon S3 in the AWS Management Console. The AWS Management Console provides convenient management of your compute, storage, and other AWS cloud resources through a simple point-and-click, web-based interface. Any Amazon S3 user can now easily create buckets, upload objects, and set access controls, all from a browser and without needing to write any code.
