Celebs gear up for Bike New York
The TD Five Boro Bike Tour taking place on Sunday will attract some 32,000 bicyclists, including a handful of celebrities and those riding for a cause. But most participants simply want to have a good time cycling through the city on traffic-free streets. One of the notables includes the city's chief biking enthusiast, Janette Sadik-Khan, commissioner of the city's Department of Transportation. Not only will she ride in the tour, as she has for years, but she will be taking a star turn on a fashion runway, modeling cycling apparel on Saturday at Basketball City, which is hosting Bike Expo New York. Presented by Momentum Magazine the “Be Chic, Be NY” show is a fitting role for Ms. Sadik-Khan, who has been dubbed the most stylish commissioner at City Hall and is known for riding her bike around town wearing heels and dresses. The Department of Transportation did not respond to requests for comment about the commissioner's fashion cred. Soccer and reality television star Ethan Zohn, who signed up to participate in the Bike Tour this year, has been sidelined by his battle with cancer. He will be represented by his fellow Survivor and Amazing Race cast mates. His reality star friends, including Parvati Shallow, Ozzy Lusth, Eliza Orlins and Mikey Bortone, all of Survivor , and Erika Shay, Dennis Frentsos and Mark Yturralde of Amazing Race , have come together to ride in his honor, according to a spokeswoman for Bike New York, which produces the bike tour. Even a royal family member will be riding on Sunday. Not only is Prince Pieter-Christiaan van Oranje-Nassau of the Netherlands cycling 40 miles, he'll be giving bike riding instruction at the expo on Saturday. The prince is raising funds for his Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which promotes social change through sports. There will also be a dozen children with serious medical conditions who will ride with two doctors as part of Kids of Courage, a non-profit that provides activities and trips for the children and their families. The bike tour is raising money for 40 charities this year, including Kids of Courage. Last year, it raised more than $1 million for such organizations.
