Aggreko Powers 2013 America’s Cup

Aggreko, the global leader in temporary power generation and temperature control solutions, has been named an Official Local Supplier to America’s Cup Event Authority, and is providing a complete power solution to operate the 34th America’s Cup experience, taking place July 4 - September 21 in San Francisco, CA. Dating back to 1851, the world-class sailing event represents the oldest trophy in international sport, and will be televised around the world.

“The America’s Cup demands all facets of its event to operate at a high level of sustainability, whether achieved by optimizing the use of energy or minimizing air emissions,” said George Long, Event Services Manager, Aggreko North America. “Aggreko designed a reliable and sustainable solution for the event, including the use of Tier 4 generators, which incorporate the latest engine technology available to reduce emissions, and the use of utility power where possible.”

Aggreko’s major events team is powering a dozen Superyachts and multiple venues throughout San Francisco, including a 9,000-seat temporary amphitheatre, sponsor areas, VIP clubs, food courts, corporate chalets and video walls broadcasting the event to viewers across the city. The installation requires approximately 20 miles of cable and various sized event-purpose generators for clean and quiet operation, providing primary as well as secondary backup power for the media compound.

Aggreko planned and coordinated the installation with several dozen vendors, from construction and scaffolding companies to painters, decorators and designers. The power design included a cable routing system that would allow racing enthusiasts to enjoy the event, while not interfering with the safety and enjoyment of tourists and fans.

“Aggreko has a reputation for delivering excellent, customized power solutions to meet any unique need,” said John Briggs of the America’s Cup Event Authority. “Their ability to provide a sustainable, reliable and safe solution made them the obvious choice for the America’s Cup event and we are proud to have Aggreko on our team.”

Aggreko has a long history of providing power to high-profile events, including the 2013 Presidential Inauguration and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Aggreko provides power and temperature control solutions to customers who need them either very quickly, or for a short or indeterminate length of time. Examples would be the supply of power to an industrial site which needs to service its permanent power supply, supplying a whole city in times of power shortage, or providing a major sporting event with power and cooling systems. We serve our customers either through our 194 service centres, which we call the Local business, or globally through our Power Projects business.

In the Local business, which accounts for about half of our revenues, we hire our equipment to customers, who then operate it for themselves, although we retain responsibility for servicing and maintaining it. In the Power Projects business, which also accounts for about half of our revenues, we operate as a power producer. We install and operate power plants and we charge our customers both for providing the generating capacity, and for the electricity we produce. We design and manufacture equipment specifically for these requirements in our factory in Dumbarton, Scotland.

Recent customers include the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and the power utilities in over 50 countries including the UK, France, Angola, Kenya, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Chile, Brazil and the USA.

In 2012 we fulfilled almost 45,000 customers’ assignments and 70% of those who responded to our research gave us a recommendation of 9 or 10 out of 10.
