Q&A with Tim Chey, writer and producer of the movie 'Carry Me Home'

Quick Q&A with the film’s writer/producer Tim Chey:
1) Can you tell us what the story is about?
Sure. There are two stories going on. One is a slave family escaping to Canada and on their heels is infamous slave hunter and the other is the story of John Newton, the writer of ‘Amazing Grace’
2) And this is also a musical?
Yes. That was the vision of the story and the screenplay
3) What is it like producing a movie?
It’s a lot of work! (laughs) Because the people I initially was working with didn’t know film production, a lot of the burden was left on me. I got us the locations, the working ship, the actors in casting in both LA and New York, the budget, the DP, the crew, etc. But, I did it all for the Lord, no one else.
4) What is the worst thing about making a film?
Movies are like a magnet for all the knuckleheads and losers who want fame and glory. They have no experience in filmmaking or writing or acting, yet want to direct or produce or star – it’s insane. It’s like me trying out to become a professional basketball player because I play at the YMCA. (laughs).
5) What about story-telling? Can too many chefs ruin the stew?
Absolutely. Again, you have people who never have written a thing in their lives telling you how to improve the story. It’s the fame and glory thing again. The movie business gets to their head – they’re extremely dangerous people to run across as an artist. It’s a warning to all artists.
6) Do you find the message of God compromised in faith-based films?
All the time. Jesus said if you’re ashamed of me, I’ll be ashamed of you. These lukewarm Christians are another dangerous group. They come at you with a smile, but they’re actually devil-worshippers. Seriously. They’re mission is take the name of Jesus Christ out of your films.
7) What was the impetus to making the film, ‘Carry Me Home’?
I love redemptive stories. The theme of redemption is so powerful and big. God’s redemption. How Christ changed my life. What a better way than to show two redemptive stories centered around the Gospel spirituals, like Amazing Grace, City Called Heaven, Caanan Land, etc.
