PetSmart Launches CommUNITY Week Across North America

PetSmart’s 53,000 associates across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico are working together this week to give back during the company’s first-ever enterprise-wide week of volunteering. CommUNITY Week kicks off today and goes through Sunday, September 14. During this time, PetSmart associates will participate in a variety of different volunteer activities from hosting pet food drives and holding adoption events to walking shelter dogs and cleaning up facilities.

PetSmart Gives Back and CommUNITY Week are centered on giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said David Lenhardt, president and CEO of PetSmart. “CommUNITY Week provides an opportunity for PetSmart associates to take a step outside of their every-day jobs and say thank you to the communities and pet parents who support our stores.”

As part of CommUNITY Week, nearly 400 stores from coast to coast will be participating in pet food drives to support their local community. These food drives support local food banks, PetSmart Gives Back partners or PetSmart Charities animal welfare organizations. Customers are encouraged to purchase food in-store to donate.

CommUNITY Week is an initiative of PetSmart Gives Back, PetSmart’s community engagement program which encourages all associates to give back to their local communities.

PetSmart also has several national programs which operate under its community relations program, PetSmart Gives Back. PetSmart supports organizations that make communities a better place to call home and enrich people’s lives through the power of pets. Programs include:

  • PetSmart for Patriots – pairs assistance dogs with wounded military veterans raised and trained by Canine Companions for Independence. The partnership launched nationwide in February 2014; information is available in PetSmart stores nationwide.
  • PetSmart Promise – supports homeless families in keeping their pets. The program will be in eight Family Promise day centers by the end of 2014.
  • PetSmart Paws for Hope – promotes healing through therapy dogs at hospitals. The program will be operating in seven hospitals in North America by the end of 2014.
  • P.U.P. (Pop Up Park) – a portable community dog park which will be operating in four communities by the end of 2014.
