Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN), a premier transportation and logistics provider, was honored for the second consecutive year with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Recognized as a leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency, this year Werner was honored in two categories – Refrigerated and TL/Dry Van. Werner’s industry-leading sustainability efforts have conserved more than 100 million gallons of fuel since 2007 and reduced its carbon footprint by more than 1 million tons.
“Werner Enterprises is honored to be recognized with the SmartWay Excellence Award,” said Steve Phillips, senior vice president of Fleet Resources. “We have more than 11,000 associates who take great pride in our sustainability efforts, and this award is an acknowledgement those efforts are paying off. Our commitment to sustainability initiatives has helped us improve year over year, and we will continue to do our best to help protect the environment for generations to come.”
Werner was one of 55 companies selected, representing the top 2 percent of environmental performers among the approximately 3,000 SmartWay Partners. All carrier awardees were recognized Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Annual Management Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, California.
“SmartWay carriers deserve our gratitude for a decade of progress in cutting carbon pollution while saving their customer money in fuel costs," said Chris Grundler, director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation & Air Quality. "They have reduced thousands of tons of dangerous pollutants and climate altering greenhouse gases while raising the bar on a sustainable transportation future.”
