Tesla Motors Inc. (Nasdaq: TSLA) Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk will be making an announcement today (Thursday) at an event in Hawthorne, Calif., but the subject of the Tesla announcement remains a mystery.

Last week, Musk sent out a vague tweet that only said "about time to unveil the D and something else," accompanied by a picture of a garage door opening with a Tesla Model S behind it.

Tesla spokespeople have not commented on the announcement.

Bloomberg reported this week that Musk will unveil new computer-controlled driving features, citing unnamed sources close to the matter. Last month, Musk said that he would like a fully autonomous Tesla car on the road in the next five to six years. This announcement may be the first step toward that goal.

Others have speculated that the "D" might be all-wheel-drive technology for Tesla vehicles. Previously, Musk has mentioned that he wants to make his luxury vehicles all-wheel-drive and has called it a "dual-motor" system. Those capabilities would appeal to customers living in colder climates.

Since sending the tweet on Oct. 1, TSLA stock has climbed 5%, and closed yesterday at $259.28. Because TSLA is such a volatile stock, shareholders can expect to see another large movement today and tomorrow depending on the significance of the announcement.

On Aug. 29, TSLA jumped more than 3% after the company announced a partnership with a Chinese mobile-phone company to help build additional charging stations. On June 16, TSLA stock gained 9% following reports that the company was working with BMW to expand charging technologies.

More about Tesla: TSLA is one of the most volatile short-term stocks on the market, so it's not the perfect investment for everyone. However, for these types of investors, it's a great option...
