Harper Lee Will Release “To Kill a Mockingbird” Sequel

In conjunction with Harper Lee’s announcement that the sequel to her American classic will be published, Books-A-Million invites readers to relive the Pulitzer Prize winning novel or experience it for the first time by ordering “To Kill a Mockingbird” at Books-A-Million online. Books-A-Million is also offering pre-orders of “Go Set a Watchman” online. Lee originally wrote “Go Set a Watchman” in the 1950s and it will be published July 14. The novel was recently discovered and will be released without any revisions.

“I am ecstatic we are going to have a new novel from Harper Lee. I have read her first classic countless times and cannot wait to see the development of those unforgettable characters,” said Terrance Finley, CEO and President of Books-A-Million. “I know that our customers are awaiting this release as much as we are!”

“Go Set a Watchman” contains Scout Finch, one of the featured characters in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” In the newly discovered novel, Scout has returned to Lee’s Maycomb, Alabama to visit her father, 20 years after the events that took place in Lee’s classic novel. Scout is now an adult woman and her recollections of childhood constituted the foundation for “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

“Everyone who has read “To Kill a Mockingbird” has longed for another book from Harper Lee,” said Margaret Terwey, Senior Fiction Buyer for Books-A-Million. “All of us at Books-A-Million are beyond excited about her new book!”

Released in 1960, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is considered one of the greatest works of American literature ever published. It has won the Pulitzer Prize and sold over 40 million copies. Its racial themes and language have led it to be occasionally banned from public classrooms.

Lee lived in New York during the 1950s but is a native of Monroeville, Ala. where she currently resides. Many of the events in “To Kill a Mockingbird” are thought to be based loosely on her childhood observations while growing up in Alabama.
