The decline in new home sales wasn't as bad as economists expected.
The pace of sales fell 0.2% to an annualized rate of 481,000 units.
Economists had forecast a rate of 470,000 units.
The median sales price in January of as new house was $294,300.
There were 218,000 new houses available for sale, representing a 5.4 month supply.
"The housing market has been mixed as of late, with a disappointing existing home sales report earlier this week that reflected the cold weather and a growing number of refi’s and less momentum for purchases," BNP Paribas' Bricklin Dwyer noted.
