Exelis wins IHS Jane's Air Traffic Control Award in the Enabling Technology category

Exelis (NYSE: XLS), a leader in providing critical network solutions, has been awarded the 2015 IHS Jane's Air Traffic Control (ATC) Award in the Enabling Technology category. Exelis is on the winning team for its work on the Heathrow Cross-Border Arrival Management (XMAN) program in the United Kingdom.

The award was presented to Exelis on Monday at the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO) air traffic management (ATM) Dinner in Madrid, Spain, prior to the annual World ATM Congress, a three-day exhibition and conference devoted to ATM and ATC.

The IHS Jane’s ATC Awards have been the air traffic control and air traffic management industry’s premier awards over the past 15 years. The Exelis winning entry was selected from 42 shortlisted nominations in six categories: Environment, Enabling Technology, Service Provision, Industry, Innovation and Runway.

For its winning program in the Enabling Technology category, Exelis partnered with NATS to reduce the time aircraft spend circling in ‘holding stacks’ around London’s Heathrow Airport. Reduced circling minimizes fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions. The Enabling Technology award category recognizes contributions to enhanced air traffic capacity and safety.

The winning Heathrow XMAN team provided cross-border arrivals management via the exchange of Heathrow arrival information with ATC operations at adjacent centers. This collaboration reduces the time aircraft spend circling around London at low levels. The effect is savings in fuel and carbon emissions as aircraft are more efficient when flying at high level, yielding a significant benefit to airline customers.

Heathrow XMAN is the first multiple air navigation service provider cross border arrivals trial of its kind anywhere in the world and a prime example of partnership working for the benefit of airline customers, as well as a potential future model for the industry. Heathrow XMAN teammates include NATS, Snowflake Software, Direction des Services de la Navigation Aérienne, EUROCONTROL (Maastricht) and the Irish Aviation Authority.
