Mississippi Unveils Personalized State Portal

The state of Mississippi recently unveiled the latest enhancements to the state’s official website, ms.gov. These enhancements extend the goal of citizen engagement by bringing a personalized experience to the individual user. Visitors to the award-winning site can now customize their experience by selecting their individual ms.gov theme. The available themes highlight Mississippi’s beautiful beaches, lakes, and agriculture with images taken and submitted by Mississippi residents.

Furthering engagement and customization on ms.gov is the addition of MyMS, a new service for Mississippi citizens. MyMS encourages users to set and receive reminders and alerts for services important to them, opening communication channels between the state and its citizens. Along with important personalized reminders, MyMS gives users the ability to elect to receive alerts, including amber, silver, and important weather alerts.

The content that users expect when they visit ms.gov is now even easier to access. Top searches have been implemented into large visual and graphical boxes that transition users directly to the content they are seeking. The comprehensive agency directory, state map, elected official’s social media channels, Mississippi news, alerts, job searches, and the latest online state services can all be found on the ms.gov homepage by simply clicking through dynamic content slides.

Dr. Craig Orgeron, Mississippi’s Chief Information Officer and Executive Director of the Department of Information Technology Services, describes ms.gov’s recent upgrades by saying, “The addition of MyMS and the customization enhancements are the next logical steps for ms.gov to better interact with citizens. The streamlined mobile approach and user-selected themes deliver focused content with an inviting design.”

Mobile visitors account for over 30 percent of all visits to ms.gov, and in the past year smartphone usage has exploded with a 62 percent increase in visits. To accommodate this growing mobile user base ms.gov employs a true mobile-first design that conforms to the user’s browser window size making it fully responsive. Users who access ms.gov from mobile devices benefit from a grid layout that serves up content in an easily accessible and familiar design, without compromising content. The grid layout deployed for mobile smartphones and tablets is an intuitive interface designed around the use of touch-actions and easy scrolling for our mobile-focused users.

“With technology rapidly changing, how citizens interact with Government is changing too. A mobile-first approach is a necessity to reach the staggering number of mobile users in Mississippi,” said Dr. Orgeron.

The ms.gov website continues to promote citizen-connected government by providing access to 136 government social media pages, Flickr photo groups, and YouTube channels. More than 4,000 Facebook and Twitter followers receive updates on the 140 online services throughout the state of Mississippi.

The state’s official website was redesigned at no cost to the state or citizens utilizing a self-funded model with Mississippi’s eGovernment partner, Mississippi Interactive (MSI), a subsidiary of NIC (NASDAQ: EGOV), and the State of Mississippi. Under the self-funded model the ms.gov designs and enhancements are developed at no cost to the state or the citizens. For a full listing of all awards won by ms.gov, click here.
