Metis Data Science Training Program Launches Data Visualization With D3.js. Class Designed and Taught By Kevin Quealy, Graphics Editor for The New York Times

Amidst growing employer demand for data science skills training, Metis -- the data science training program owned by Kaplan -- has launched a new data visualization class designed and taught by Kevin Quealy, a graphics editor for The New York Times and a contributor to the paper’s data-centric blog about policy, politics and everyday life, “The Upshot.”

Businesses are increasingly grappling with how to interpret and apply massive amounts of data, driving a need for professionals with the skills to code and manipulate the data. The new Metis course is designed to teach individuals how to bring data to life using D3.js., a powerful JavaScript library that is frequently used to create interactive web-based data visualizations. Created by Quealy’s former colleague at The New York Times, D3.js enables its users to communicate data-driven information effectively and interactively through the Web.

“In a world where data has become a critical part of our business currency, a growing number of professionals are seeking the skills required to manipulate complex data sets in order to visualize quantitative information,” said Jason Moss, co-founder, Metis. “We wanted to create an industry-leading course to train for this discrete skill set, and partnering with Kevin Quealy, who has been at the forefront of creating innovative data visualizations, allowed us to do so. We are thrilled to tap into his expertise to help address a skills need.”

The new course, which starts today, is the latest program offered by Metis, which last year introduced a data science bootcamp to train aspiring data scientists. The inaugural data visualization class has already fully enrolled, and Metis events in the past year have attracted several hundred applicants -- underscoring the high interest in data science training.

“Metis is a really nice mashup of practicing data scientists and a company that knows education deeply. The programs focus on the core view that data science is primarily learning knowledge and practicing skills,” said Randy Carnevale, Director of Data Science at Capital One Labs. “Metis focuses more heavily on the student aspects than other programs, cementing deep education and teaching with practical project-based work to deliver something that’s extremely employer-friendly.”

The first Metis Data Visualization with D3.js. course launches today and runs for six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Metis space in New York City. Metis plans to run its second data visualization class in the fall. For more on Metis, go to www.thisismetis.com.
