Owens Corning Joins Chief Executive Magazine’s Annual Ranking of “Best Companies for Leaders”

Owens Corning has been recognized as a global leader in leadership development, according to an annual ranking from Chief Executive magazine. Owens Corning ranked 11th on the “2016 Best Companies for Leaders” list, which consists of 40 public companies in all.

“Owens Corning is honored with the recognition from Chief Executive for our leadership development efforts,” said Dan Smith, senior vice president of Organization and Administration. “We’ve invested heavily in development programs at all levels of our organization. These global investments are critical to building market-leading businesses that meet the needs of our customers, shareholders, and employees alike.”

Each year since 2005, Chief Executive and GrowthPlay, a sales and leadership research and consulting firm, has reached out to world-class companies through a questionnaire and interviews to learn what they are doing to identify and nurture people three or more levels from the CEO.

Criteria for the Best Companies for Leaders ranking include:

  • Having a formal leadership process in place
  • Commitment of the CEO to leadership development measured by the percent of time invested
  • Depth of the leadership bench as measured by the percent of senior management positions, as well as middle management positions, filled by internal candidates
  • Number of other companies that report recruiting from the company being assessed
  • Shareholder value performance

“We made a concerted effort starting in 2011 to really invest more time, energy and dollars in our leadership programs,” added Suzann Trevisan, vice president, HR Centers of Excellence. “And we continue to invest in this area to help leaders connect, collaborate, ideate, experiment, execute and drive results for our customers, shareholders and employees. For our company’s growth and success to continue, so must our commitment to leadership development.”

Key leadership development programs at Owens Corning have produced high levels of retention and promotion. The company’s top leadership ranks are filled largely with the “graduates” of these programs. Similarly, a high – and growing – percentage of middle and senior leadership positions are filled by leaders advancing their Owens Corning careers.
