Manufacturer Better Manages Complex HR, Payroll with UltiPro

Ultimate Software (Nasdaq:ULTI), a leading provider of human capital management (HCM) solutions in the cloud, announced today that Mi-Jack Products, a major U.S. manufacturer of industrial cranes for the railroad- and port-intermodal industries worldwide, has deployed Ultimate’s comprehensive cloud HCM solution, UltiPro®, to simplify its complex benefits management and free its managers to focus more on people than processes.

Located in Hazel Crest, Illinois, Mi-Jack manufactures the Travelift® and Translift® rubber-tired gantry cranes and special component machinery and solutions. Founded in 1954, the company maintains four regional operations, five sales offices, and more than 60 intermodal terminals in North America.

Prior to going live on UltiPro, Mi-Jack’s HR team and managers had juggled multiple accruals and benefits plans, including 24 different PTO plans for its union and non-union employees within the United States and Canada. The inherent complexities in managing the dozens of plans resulted in communication issues, inconsistencies, and challenges with record-keeping and reporting.

For instance, before UltiPro, PTO was manually submitted and tracked, with the requests presented on paper. Employees relied on managers to keep track of this information and respond to any inquiries. According to Kristin Yzaguirre, human resources generalist at Mi-Jack, devoting so much time to employees’ PTO concerns often impacted manager productivity.

“Managers and employees were spending too much time tracking benefits plans and handling processes rather than focusing on their work,” said Yzaguirre. “Ultimately, our technology challenges were costing the company financially and operationally. We needed an HCM solution that we could configure to address our unique needs, would help us service our employees well, and enable us to better manage our business.”

With UltiPro, Mi-Jack’s employees can now track and manage their PTO and other benefits without aid from managers. When needed, managers can log into the system from any location to view and gather more detail about accruals, rollovers, and payout calculations. Compliance with the company’s union contracts is also streamlined and no longer requires numerous spreadsheets.

“UltiPro has automated our complex HCM and is helping us manage our workforce well,” said Yzaguirre. “It gives us insight into our manpower expenses with reporting, and we can now easily manage compliance with company policy, Canadian law, and various collective bargaining agreements. With employees in multiple countries, unions, and multiple accrual and benefits plans, we are grateful we found UltiPro to help us.”

“In today’s changing workforce, many companies — especially manufacturers — are beleaguered by complex HCM, which is very difficult to manage in a manual, spreadsheet-based environment,” said Chris Phenicie, chief sales officer at Ultimate. “We are pleased that Mi-Jack Products is utilizing UltiPro to address its challenges, liberating managers and employees to put their energies into developing quality products and offering value-added services.”
