North Carolina Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice Adds Kaplan University as Educational Partner

The North Carolina Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice (DACJJ) announced a partnership that offers employees the opportunity to efficiently pursue a bachelor’s degree at regionally-accredited Kaplan University—saving them time and money in the process.

The new partnership was signed recently at the DACJJ annual prison managers meeting in Greensboro.

The partnership program was designed to help employees advance in their careers while supporting the agency goal to increase employee retention and overall well-being as part of its WE CARE initiative.

WE CARE (Wellness Education Committed to Assisting and Reaching our Employees) is an initiative created by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety to address overall employee wellness for the whole person – physically, mentally and emotionally.

Regionally accredited Kaplan University offers online courses and degree programs that help working adults pursue their post-secondary education while juggling other competing responsibilities that include work and family.

Scott A. Kilgore, Senior Vice President of Strategic Relationships said, “More than one quarter (29%+) of Kaplan University students are active military, veterans or military spouses. Our expertise helping these students navigate their degree path significantly correlates to our partnership with North Carolina’s DACJJ and the success of their employees.”

Saving Time and Money:

Through a faculty-led, detailed review of the DACJJ’s training courses, the University is able to articulate the training and work experience of the DACJJ’s employees for college credit, shortening the time to degree attainment by not repeating the knowledge or skills already learned allowing the student to focus on what they do need to learn. Kaplan University also includes articulation of military training and experience which is especially valuable considering more than one-third of the 11,000-plus DACJJ correctional officers are veterans of the Armed Services.

Additionally, DACJJ employees who pursue an undergraduate degree at Kaplan University will benefit from a tuition discount and have the cost of books included as a result of the partnership, as well as have the technology fee of $295 per term waived.

“DACJJ employees who participate in the program and enroll at Kaplan University will benefit in multiple ways,” said Bryon Mills, Director of Government Education Solutions for Kaplan University. “For example, in the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program, a corrections officer with working experience who completes the DACJJ’s courses can earn a Bachelor degree in less than three (3) years, with military veterans earning additional course credits for their military training and experience that could lead to earning a bachelor’s degree in even less time.”
