Rite Aid Urges People to Get Vaccinated Against the Flu as Flu Activity Increases

With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting widespread flu activity in 46 states, Rite Aid is urging people to get vaccinated against the flu if they haven’t already done so. With flu typically peaking between December and February, it’s possible for the flu season to run through March, meaning there is still time to get vaccinated. The CDC estimates the flu will infect one in five Americans this year.

“With the CDC reporting widespread flu activity, health experts are predicting that the 2017-2018 flu season will be one of the worst in recent history,” says Jocelyn Konrad, Rite Aid executive vice president of pharmacy. “As we enter the peak of flu season, it’s not too late for people who haven’t been vaccinated against the flu to do so. Though it takes two weeks to gain full protection against the flu, getting a flu shot as soon as possible is the single best way to fight the flu and the vaccine also helps to ease the severity and duration of symptoms if you come down with the flu.”

Flu shots are currently available at all Rite Aid pharmacies and are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. Rite Aid certified immunizing pharmacists are able to administer flu shots, subject to state regulations, during pharmacy hours; no appointment is necessary. Rite Aid pharmacies across the country are currently offering three types of flu vaccines: a quadrivalent flu vaccine, which offers protection against four strains of the flu, the standard trivalent vaccine, and FLUAD, a trivalent vaccine with adjuvant, an ingredient that helps create a stronger immune response to vaccination, which is approved for people 65 and older.

Additionally, Rite Aid pharmacists are available to counsel customers on over-the-counter medicines, like pain relievers, cough and cold medicines and hydration products that can be used to help manage symptoms associated with the flu. Rite Aid pharmacies also have supplies of the prescription medications Tamiflu and Relenza for those patients whose doctor has recommended they take one of these medications or should have a prescription ready if they do require the medications. To help prevent the spread of the flu, Rite Aid store shelves are also stocked with additional supplies of hand sanitizer and soaps, masks, gloves, tissues and household disinfectants.
