Unique Bio-Attack Detector Shown on Los Angeles Newscasts

JMAR Technologies, Inc., today announced their award-winning BioSentry® detection system received favorable exposure in Los Angeles newscasts. Intelligence warnings, news reports, and even popular television programs like FOX Broadcasting’s show 24 remind us of threats to our water supplies. KTTV (FOX News 11) in Los Angeles researched JMAR’s BioSentry® and reported on this unique online system for real-time detection of waterborne pathogens.

BioSentry® “almost instantly detects and warns of a life-threatening danger in our water works,” stated KTTV reporter Phil Shuman. Witnessing a real-time event using an Anthrax surrogate, he reported “The Anthrax-like material is detected within a minute. Computer screens turn red as the danger level rises and BioSentry® signals an alert. That alert is sent by the Internet and can be monitored worldwide.”

BioSentry® works by shining its laser into source water moving through a flow cell. Any particles flowing through the laser beam cast unique bio-optical signatures which are photographed and categorized via computer. Real-time alerts are then signaled for any of the following categories:

  • Spore-shaped (Anthrax, etc.)
  • Rod-shaped (E. coli, Salmonella, etc.)
  • Protozoa-shaped (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, etc.)
  • All other shapes and particles are categorized as “unknown

“When it comes to our water supplies,” said JMAR’s Chief Executive Officer, C. Neil Beer, Ph.D., “it is important to remember these points:

  • The next bio-terrorist attack is not a question of ‘if,’ but ‘when.’
  • Rapid detection in minutes (versus hours or days) will mean the difference between an unsuccessful bio-attack or an epidemic with untold numbers of illnesses and deaths.”

Frost & Sullivan chose BioSentry® as the leading innovative approach to water quality monitoring in their 2008 Biological Detection Product of the Year Award.
