AP Mobile Launches 2.0.1 Version on Apple App Store, Updated App Features Customizable Front Page with “News you Choose”

The Associated Press today announced the availability of a significant update to the AP Mobile application on the Apple App Store. The soft launch of version 2.0 of the AP Mobile app took place last week, and a new version was released this week in response to user feedback.

The new AP Mobile app gives iPhone and iPod touch users the power to customize their own "Front Page" to define the news they see when they open the app. Featuring more than 50 types of news to choose, version 2.0 allows users to select from a wide range of categories, including Golf, Showbiz Reviews, Wacky, Tech and Travel.

With AP Mobile's “Front Page," iPhone users can now decide what will show up on their AP Mobile homepage as well as the number of stories displayed for each news category -- from breaking developments to local news from hometowns like Anchorage or Austin, national or international coverage alongside the latest from Wall Street and the White House.

Timing of the AP Mobile release coincides with the first anniversary of AP Mobile, www.apnews.com.

“With this newest Apple App Store release, we look forward to continuing to be a leader in the mobile news space,” said Jeff Litvack, AP's mobile and emerging products general manager. “When the decision was made for AP to enter the mobile market, our team decided that the revolutionary iPhone and iPod touch were the natural choices for the development of our innovative news application, and that move has paid off in spades. For the month of April, we found that iPhone users visit AP Mobile five times more often than other smartphone users.”

In addition to AP Mobile’s “Front Page,” features in the update include:

  • Global Regional Selection - Users can select global regions to get news from specific countries and regions.
  • Language Localization - Multi-language versions are available including Spanish, French and German for specific regions.
  • Weather Section including radar/satellite view, temperature, conditions, highs/lows, hourly forecast for up to six hours, and five-day forecast for local area from AccuWeather.com. Users can choose to view weather in Celsius or Fahrenheit.
  • Health and Science Channels provide users access to the latest health and science stories with the addition of new channels. Existing news categories include: Top News, Local News, Business, Politics, Tech, Sports, Showbiz and Wacky.
  • Twitter-Enabled Sharing - Users can share stories not only with friends through SMS and e-mail, but also with their social network through integration with Twitter and Facebook. Twitter users are also invited to follow AP Mobile for breaking developments at www.twitter.com/AP_Mobile.
