Moved by the recent tragedy in the northeast, artist Pat Matthews paid homage to the resilience of the United States of America in his most recent piece, “The Endless Strength of America”. The 24” by 36” American flag painting will arrive at Waxlander Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Santa Fe, NM to be auctioned during the second annual Passport to the Arts event on Saturday, May 11th. Matthews will hand-deliver 100% of the bidding proceeds to The One Fund in Boston, which was set up by Massachusetts’ Governor and Boston’s Mayor to benefit the victims and families affected by the tragic Boston Marathon bombing.

The American flag has become a signature genre of Matthews’. He was similarly inspired to paint a flag in response to 9/11. In fact, he painted it over a landscape he had just completed. Matthews gave 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the 1,000 Limited Edition signed and numbered lithograph prints to a special fund for the New York City fire fighters. The original painting, “American Pride” with 343 lithograph prints was given to Engine 4, Ladder Company 54, Battalion 9 Fire Station, located at 782 Eighth Avenue, New York City – the fire station that experienced terrible loss of life of their morning crew.

Matthews’ flag paintings represent the United States’ ability to overcome strife, and they serve as a celebration of the enduring pride this country was founded upon. These paintings can be found anywhere from governors’ collections to private homes and businesses across the country.

A native of Arkansas, Matthews spent much of his youth outside, soaking up the landscape, hunting and fishing. His first career as an architect serves as suitable foreshadowing to his present career; both involve creativity and execution. Matthews has been a full-time artist for 12 years. Find several of Matthews’ works at Waxlander Gallery and Sculpture Garden on the historic Canyon Road in Santa Fe, NM. Waxlander Gallery and Sculpture Garden has been operating for 29 years and features contemporary fine art and sculpture.
