Capella University Expands Doctoral Programs in its School of Public Service Leadership

Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), a regionally accredited online university which offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers, announces three new doctoral programs in its school of Public Service Leadership; a PhD in Emergency Management, Doctor of Emergency Management and a PhD in Criminal Justice. The university is one of the first to offer both online PhD and professional doctorate programs in Emergency Management.

According to an employer survey published by Hart Research Associates, more than three out of four employers say they want colleges to place more emphasis on helping students develop five key learning outcomes: critical thinking, complex problem-solving, written and oral communication, and applied knowledge in real-world settings. Capella’s school of Public Service Leadership curriculum model is built on this foundation of competencies and skills that employers want.

Each program is research based, with a focus on practical application, on-the-job problem-solving skills and decision-making capabilities. Students will develop a deep understanding of foundational theory and how it directly applies to the current and future needs of their professions, as well as the skills and knowledge to research, teach, consult, and lead in the emergency management and criminal justice fields.

“Criminal justice and emergency management are incredibly important areas within our society. Our new programs are designed to provide meaningful and hands-on opportunities to further develop leadership skills, with a focus on understanding best practices in communication and collaborative team-building,” said Beth Koenig, dean of the school of Public Service Leadership at Capella University. “Professionals in both criminal justice and emergency management will draw upon critical thinking, ethics and cultural awareness in simulated environments that allow for strategic decision-making processes to be fully explored.”
