Olympic Gold Medalist goes from Boxing Ring to MMA Cage
PR Log - Apr 08, 2012 - Howard Davis Jr. is getting ready for his next challenge on Friday, April 27th, 2012 for Fight Time 9 – MMA Explosion.   He’s not fighting on the show; however, he’s the man behind the promotion – Fight Time Promotions.

At 56, the 1976 Olympic Gold Medal Boxer is going on his 9th MMA event as a professional fight promoter in Florida.   Davis has had successful MMA shows at the historic War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale, FL as the venue’s exclusive Mixed Martial Arts promoter.

The formula has been hard work, a strong marketing team and his relationship with some of the top MMA fighters around.

“I’ve been blessed to have had some of the most well-known fighters on our shows and I’m very grateful to them,” said Howard Davis Jr., CEO of Fight Time Promotions, LLC.

The latest coup for Davis’ company will come on Friday, April 27th, 2012 with UFC Veteran Wilson Gouveia as the main event.  The hard-hitting Brazilian fought 10 times on the UFC and is even featured on the company’s video game.

“I trust Howard 100-percent and I’m ready to give Fight Time a great show,” said the Light Heavyweight fighter.

The company launched its “Fight Time” series in 2010 and captured well-known MMA veteran Jeff “The Snowman” Monson as the main event for the inaugural show.   Howard Davis Jr.’s Fight Time Promotions has also featured fighters such as Jessica Aguilar, who is considered to be on the best flyweight female fighters in the world and well known fighters such as Rafael Dias and Rafael Rebello.

When Davis moved to Florida from New Jersey in 2004, he was hand-picked by the then start-up American Top Team, which is now one of the top Mixed Martial Arts facilities in the world.   As the Boxing Director, Davis’ was in charge of the school’s striking program for its MMA pupils.

For nearly 8 years, Davis trained MMA fighters: Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva, Jeff “The Snowman” Monson, Din Thomas, Mike Brown, Rich Attonito and many more.   Davis received international attention in the MMA world when we was asked by the most recognizable UFC fighter for some assistance in his striking; Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell.

Davis was also featured in the Ultimate Fighter Season #11 with Liddell as the striking coach on the popular reality show on Spike TV; in which the UFC searches for its next fighting sensation.

“MMA has been very good to me,” said Davis.  “I would have never thought that I would now be promoting and I’m loving every minute of it,” he adds.

In 2011, Fight Time Promotions beat out all of the Florida promoters in boxing and MMA by holding more shows than any other promoter.   The company also employed more fighters than any other promoter in the state.  The company held the first-ever MMA Heavyweight World Title Fight in Florida.  Jeff “The Snowman” Monson, who has fought on the promotion three times, beat out popular fighter Tony Lopez.

Davis admits that being a Promoter is not always fun and glamorous.  There are the daily rituals of securing sponsors to help pay the bills for the show, negotiating the next deal to get the fighters that work well for the organization and staff management.

That’s why Davis isn’t alone.  He has a consistent team of employees spearheaded by his wife and business partner, Karla Guadamuz-Davis.
“Every day is different and it brings new challenges,” said Guadamuz-Davis. “The reward comes when we see the fans packing our venue and having a great time from something that we created,” she adds.

The company also did something that many promoters aren’t accustomed to; setting their dates almost a year in advance.  The “Fight Time” 2012 schedule was released last year before any other promoter.  Now as the 2nd show gets closer, for the 2012 “Fight Season”, Davis is ready for his next MMA event.

Davis also makes sure that the popularity of his MMA company can have a positive influence on organizations that help children.   Last year the company raised $15,000.00 for the Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Ft. Lauderdale as they reached out to their fights fans for funds and they came through.  The company also held its 1st annual “Hope for the Holidays” Toy Drive for disadvantaged children last year and had an overflow of toys.

The company also launched its MMA Amateur Division last May in order to give young MMA fighters a chance to work their way into the Fight Time pro circuit.  Fight Time Promotions secured $25,000.00 from a sponsor and held a Lightweight amateur tournament and awarded the prize money to the winner, who will be making his pro debut with the company later this year.

The company’s slogan is: “It’s Fight Time!” And, with that Davis sits and watches the fighters walk into the cage as he enjoys the rewards of being on the other side.
“I love doing this and we will keep having MMA fights as long as the fans will have us,” said Davis.

The Fight Time 2012 Season takes place on:  April 27th, June 22, August 24th and Nov. 2nd.  The first show of the year took place in February and MMA Explosion – Fight Time 9 - promises to top the success of the previous event.
