Alcoholism Could be Cutting Your Life Short and Increasing Illness, Says Chapters Capistrano

The negative effects of alcohol on the body are nothing new, but recent studies find alcoholism could reduce life span by almost eight years and contribute to other illnesses, reveals Chapters Capistrano.

Alcoholism can affect many aspects of a person’s life from physical and mental health to financial and relationship troubles. Now, in addition to interfering with everyday life, it may actually lead to a shorter life. A recent study covered in Science 2.0 shows that hospitalized patients with alcoholism had an average lifespan 7.6 years shorter than those without this condition. They were also at higher risk of developing other illnesses. San Clemente luxury alcohol rehab center Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding these findings and the importance of seeking addiction treatment.

Alcoholism has the ability to complicate many aspects of your life,” says Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano. “People may not realize the long-term effects if they are not readily visible. You can see how alcoholism affects you financially or socially, but health risks are not always as evident in the short term. They may feel fine but the alcohol is still taking a toll on their body.”

The study compared more than 250,000 hospital patients in Great Britain over 12.5 years. According to the article, “The researchers analyzed co-morbid physical illnesses of 23,371 hospital patients with alcohol dependence and compared them with those of a control group of 233,710 randomly selected patients without alcoholism.” The results showed that while one out of every 12 patients in the control group died, this rate jumped to approximately one out of every five patients with alcoholism.

In addition, those patients with alcoholism experienced 27 physical illnesses more frequently than those in the control group. These illnesses affected “the liver, the pancreas, the airways, the gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system,” the article explained. Because their hospital admittance is often the result of an emergency, all of their physical illnesses may not be realized at the time with the focus going to acute symptoms. Dr. Dieter Schoepf of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Bonn Hospital asserts, “The results indeed relate to general hospitals in Manchester, however they are representative because of the large numbers of random samples and can therefore be transferred to other general hospitals in other countries.”

“Recognizing the signs of alcoholism early on and getting into treatment could help people to offset the effects of the alcohol and improve their health,” says Shea. “Luxury rehab centers focus on creating personalized alcohol and drug treatment plans that emphasize each individual’s needs and what works best for them. More customized care can help them to maintain control over their addiction and establish healthier routines. Abstaining from drinking may help them to curb other health issues or better manage them.” Facilities like Chapters Capistrano treat the whole person to help them make beneficial changes throughout all aspects of their life, adds Shea.
