BAE Systems recently received a $25.7 million contract from the U.S. Navy to overhaul and upgrade two Mk 45 naval guns, bringing them to the 5-inch 62-caliber Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration. The Mod 4 is an upgrade from the existing Mod 2 design, and significantly enhances overall mission performance.

“This contract illustrates the Navy’s commitment to equipping its ships with the most modern, reliable and precise naval gun systems in existence,” said Mark Signorelli, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems for BAE Systems. “The cost-effective Mk 45 Mod 4 gun systems improve the accuracy and reliability sailors need to successfully support the Navy’s broad spectrum of missions for its major combatants.”

Upon delivery, the two gun systems will be installed on new construction Arleigh Burke Class (DDG 51) Destroyers. The 5-inch Mk 45 Mod 4 includes strengthened gun and mount subsystems, advanced control system enhancements, a modern touch-screen user interface and a low maintenance gun shield.

BAE Systems has more than 40 years of experience designing and producing Mk 45 gun systems, with more than 250 shipboard applications in the U.S. Navy and nine fleets worldwide. Work on these contracts will be performed in Louisville, Kentucky and Minneapolis, Minnesota, with deliveries in 2014.
