The markets closed lower with the Dow losing 34 points to 16,418 as Japan's economic growth slowed and China's exports dropped. Nasdaq eased a point to 4334.

On the upside

The Wall Street Journal reported that a McClatchy Co. (NYSE: MNI) joint venture will sell Cars.com for up to $3 billion.

Shares of Infosonics (Nasdaq: IFON) continued climbing.

Chiquita Brands (NYSE: CQB) will merge with Fyffes in an all stock transaction.

On the downside


eCommerce China Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) dropped after Tencent acquired a 15% stake in JD.com.

Walter Energy (NYSE: WLT) will amend its credit facility.

Shares of Concord Medical Services (NYSE: CCM) continued falling.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of nearly 5 to 4 on both the NYSE and on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 held steady at 1877. Bitcoin lost $20.09 or 3.15% to $617.20.
