OpenLearning takes Malaysian education to the world! Founders meet with Malaysian Universities, officials after Malaysian University MOOCs attract over 6,000 students from 120 countries.
PRLog - Apr. 30, 2014 - SYDNEY, Australia -- Recently an OpenLearning contingent took a trip to Malaysia to meet with Taylor’s University, Malaysia’s leading provider of quality MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Co-founders Adam Brimo and Richard Buckland spent a week in consultation with educators in order to discuss the future of online education in Malaysia.
With the help of OpenLearning, Taylor’s University ran Malaysia’s first MOOC in March of 2013, with incredible results. Taylor’s University now provides several free online courses on OpenLearning. Their most recent course, Global Entrepreneurship, led by Dean of Engineering Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, inspires thousands of students and develops the business and emotional skills necessary to start a business and raise crowd funding through Pozible.
Malaysian teachers and institutions provide OpenLearning’s second highest source of online education, only surpassed by Australia, OpenLearning’s birthplace. To date over 6,000 students from 120 countries have joined MOOCs from Taylor’s University on OpenLearning.
During their trip Adam and Richard also spoke with senior staff at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Sunway University to discuss their visions for online education and Richard gave invited lectures on inspiring student engagement and community. Richard Buckland and Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi spoke at Taylor’s University and USM about how Malaysia can take advantage of MOOCs to increase the quality of education for students in Malaysia and around the world. Adam delivered a lecture for Global Entrepreneurship and met with local and online students, some of whom travelled more than two hundred kilometres to be there.
Adam Brimo and Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi were interviewed on Malaysia's most popular independent radio station, BFM. They spoke about OpenLearning, the future potential of Malaysian MOOCs, and ways to implement strategies to improve teaching quality across Malaysia and the greater global community of students.
OpenLearning’s representatives were honoured by the hospitality that they received, and by the huge level of interest in open education and improving teaching quality. They were delighted to meet with several key figures in Malaysia’s education system, including USM’s Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Omar Osman, Prof Abd Karim Alias, and Dr. Jaafar bin Jantan, a representative from the Education Ministry.
Due to Malaysia’s overwhelming and ongoing support, OpenLearning is considering selecting a Malaysian joint venture partner to propel our platform across Malaysian institutions.
