In an effort to better understand one of the biggest stresses for working parents, Experience, Inc., recently surveyed companies and organizations of all sizes and industries to understand how often working parents mix the office setting and their families.
High-level findings of Experience's "Kids in the Cubicle" survey include:
Workplace Trends
-- 38% of companies allowed parents to bring their children to work sometimes, in an emergency situation
-- 42% of companies generally do not allow employees to bring
children to work, but 20% were very supportive of parents
bringing their children to work
-- While only 14% of companies offer on-site day care, 39% do sponsor a formal "bring your child to work day" to encourage learning and awareness
-- In addition, 39% of companies have work environments that are considered child-friendly
Employee Perspectives
-- 21% of survey respondents say they have always been supportive of occasional visits from children, and 7% have become more supportive of this practice during the last 5 years
-- 44% are neither more nor less supportive than they were 5
years ago
-- 28% continue to discourage bringing kids to work
-- 60% of respondents feel that companies need to be more supportive of working parents and their children in order to retain a talented workforce that includes parents
-- 15% think companies should be more supportive to encourage
youth development
-- 16% believe that companies are already supportive enough
