Markel Corp. (NYSE: MKL) will pay a premium of approximately $3 billion in cash and stock to buy reinsurer Alterra Capital Holdings Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALTE). Shares of Market plummeted $49.81 to close at $436.24 while Alterra stocks leaped $5.03 to close at $28.18.
