California Abstract Expressionist Erle Loran (1905-1999) Original Art Offered for Sale

Robert Azensky Fine Art announces that original art from California abstract expressionist Erle Loran (American, 1905-1999) will be available to purchase on One Kings Lane starting April 12, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. PDT. The full collection can be viewed at http://ow.ly/vFwjC.

Over 50 large-scale original acrylic, oil and watercolors created from the 1930s to 1980s demonstrate Erle Loran’s theoretical and instinctual understanding of composition, form, space and color. Erle Loran was the chair of the art department at the University of California, Berkeley for 21 years and a published Paul Cézanne scholar.

Robert Azensky said, “We’re very pleased to finally be able to make available this important collection of California abstract expressionism. All these stunning pieces demonstrate Loran’s brilliant skill using the opposing qualities of static and dynamic to build interest, and they showcase his ability to create space and volume with planes and cubes.”

Loran was the founder of the ‘Berkeley School’ of painters whose work reflects Cézanne's concepts, but there is greater emphasis placed on linear and textural qualities, flat planes of color, and shallow ‘picture box’ treatment of space. Loran and this group of artists helped lead the way out of a narrow attitude toward art into the modern era and to recognize the importance of abstraction in the works of Cézanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Kandinsky, Klee, and other European artists.

“Working with such a large collection, we were able to meet one of our primary objectives, which was to keep the prices within reach of emerging, vibrant art collectors and first-time buyers,” said Azensky. “Accessibility to fine art is becoming a huge problem for these buyers. They don’t necessarily travel to Basel or go to the big auction houses. When really great art is priced out of range of ‘mere mortals,’ it discourages new and enthusiastic art collectors from investing in art because they are, understandably, reluctant to take out a second mortgage to do so.”

In the interest of maximum accessibility and visibility, Robert Azensky has joined with premier online lifestyle retailer One Kings Lane to debut the collection for sale starting April 12, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. PDT.

After the One Kings Lane preview sale has ended on April 17, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. PDT, any remaining pieces will be available through Robert Azensky Fine Art at: http://robert-azensky-fine-art.culturalspot.org/home or robertazenskyfineart@gmail.com.

Erle Loran Biography

Erle Loran (1905-1999) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Art under the direction of Cameron Booth. His talent was recognized early in 1926 when he won the Paris Prize, which provided him the benefit of a traveling scholarship to Europe where he lived in the studio of Paul Cézanne.

In 1936, Loran moved to California to take up a position teaching at the University of California at Berkeley where he eventually became Chairman of the Art Department. He invited the painter Hans Hofmann to be a visiting professor. Hofmann influenced Loran to become more abstract in his work.

In 1943, Loran published his book, Cézanne's Composition, examining the artist's work theoretically from the approach of forms and spatial factors. It was an immediate success with artists, teachers, and critics and is still available in print.
