Syrian Activist Launches Kickstarter to Fund Digital Deconstruction Exhibition

Digital art pieces express artist’s feelings towards the civil strife in Syria

WASHINGTON, DC – July 30, 2015 – Ammar Abdulhamid is a well-known prodemocracy activist from Syria, a small country in the Middle East torn by civil strife. Through the years, his activities have earned him international recognition, and he was often profiled in various publications, including the New York Times, The Smithsonian Magazine and the Arabic Edition of Newsweek which, in the summer of 2005, named him as one of “43 people making a difference in the Arab World.”

Shortly thereafter, Abdulhamid was exiled to Washington D.C. However, he still continues to express his feelings and thoughts towards the horrible things that are happening in Syria through digital art. Over the last two years, haunted by the tragic developments in his original homeland, Abdulhamid quietly worked on a digital deconstruction of the famous “Liberty Leading the People” painting by the 19th Century French painter Eugene Delacroix. After producing over 6,000 variations, he settled on 80 pieces to serve as a visual commentary on the darker aspects of the struggle for liberty.

The talented digital artist is excited to share this collection called “Liberty & Revolution” with the rest of the world through a 3-month long exhibition. However, to accomplish something like this requires a cost. So he has turned to the Kickstarter community to raise $100,000 by August 26th, 2015.

The tragic events happening in Syria has been described by the United Nations as the worst humanitarian disaster since WWII. Abdulhamid hopes the exhibition will shed light on what is going on and inspire hope for the people in Syria.

Funds received from Kickstarter will help him print his digital works on various materials and build a website dedicated specifically to the project. Abdulhamid will also produce two books at the end of the project period. One book will show all the designs printed and the second book will have the most modern variations printed alongside comments by visitors and panelists. At the exhibition, there will be exciting panel discussions in the evening twice a week that will feature input from known academics, artists, and activists.

To help bring this incredible art piece to life, please visit the Kickstarter campaign or click here. Perks will be delivered between November 2015 and June 2016. Supporters are invited to contribute their feedback, which will be published in the second book.

Please keep in mind that this is an “all-or-nothing” deal, which means if the campaign does not reach the funding goal then the project cannot move forward. So know that any amount given can make a difference, and this is an incredible opportunity to be a part of a special campaign! Help talented artist Ammar Abdulhamid reach the goal by sharing this on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. The more people know about this, the more support the campaign will receive.
