A different perspective would be, 1 in 10 people are affected by depression at some point in their life. Many people in the United States are truly defeated by their depression, and others who suffer don’t even know what’s happening to them. Oftentimes, there is a hormone imbalance. A recovering addict has damaged brains cells and in result can lead to many health problems after treatment.

The National Institute of Mental Health provides signs and symptoms of depression below:

• Lack of motivation, fatigue and decreased energy
• Irritability and agitation
• Anxious
• “Empty” feeling
• Loss of interest
• Change in sleep pattern
• Thoughts of suicide

The bible can be the best uplifter. There are stories throughout the whole book that speak of people so close to giving up, feeling weak and defeated, and searching for a light at the end of the tunnel. Belief in God can aid in dealing with depression. The book of Jeremiah, Paul, and Elijah all spoke of God’s people overwhelmed and discouraged. In today’s society, people can feel like God is silent and not responding resulting in people feeling alone.

Religion is great for people. Belief in God allows people to learn true faith and hope. Hope that things will get better, hope that God has their back, and hope that they are never alone. Belief in God may be one the best things for a recovering addict. God doesn’t ask for people to be perfect he just asks for their heart. There is peace, love, and true relationship in faith. Jesus promises us that He will never leave nor forsake us. That’s the most important thing to remember; though there may be silence, God is always there. God is near to the brokenhearted.

Religion can help recovering addicts make it through treatment and continue to live an addiction free life. There is a large community for believers across America. Having a form of hope can help with doubts and depression that may occur after treatment. There is always hope. Any individual strong enough to make it through a rehabilitation program can survive the obstacles life may throw. With a little determination and a lot of Jesus, anything is possible. Religion doesn’t automatically make life easy, but it gives hope where there may be none.
