After a month, Windows 10 is already more widespread than OS X Yosemite (MSFT)

It looks like Microsoft has escaped the Windows 8 curse.

Windows 10 has been on the market for a little more than a month, and it's already on more than 5% of traditional personal computers used worldwide, according to Net Marketshare stats compiled for us by Statista. That puts it ahead of the latest and most popular Mac operating system, OS X Yosemite, which came out last November. But Windows 7 still rules the computing world, and probably will for some time to come.

One reason why Windows 10 is doing so well is its price. Microsoft is giving it away for free to anybody with a Windows 7 or later computer. But it also does a much better job of serving the needs of traditional PC users than Windows 8, without sacrificing the touch screen capabilities that Windows 8 introduced.

Also, this chart doesn't include mobile operating systems like Android and iOS, which currently ship on more than 1 billion devices per year — far more than the 300 to 400 million PCs expected to ship in 2015.
