The Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy was donated by the Montreal Canadiens and was first awarded at the end of the 1998-99 season. It is named in honour of the legendary right winger Maurice "Rocket" Richard, who spent his eighteen-season career with the Quebecois team. He led the NHL in goal scoring five times and during the 1944-45 season was the first NHL player to reach the 500 goal milestone.
The return to the league award ceremony, this year hosted at the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas, was the culmination of a great year for the Tissot Watches Ambassador. He became the first skater in four seasons to net 60 goals and proved to be a major influencer in his Florida based side reaching the play offs in the Eastern Conference.
Stamkos has been an ambassador for the Swiss Watch giant for a number of years. He is not the first Hockey related sponsorship for the company, they have also sponsored the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships. A number of Tissot Watches are available at specialist UK retailer, The Watch Hut.
However, this year proved not to be the year that Stamkos wins the MVP trophy with both awards going to Evgeni Malkin, the Russian born star centre of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Malkin, who tallied a league-high 109 points from 50 goals and 59 assists, also beat out New York Rangers net minder Henrik Lundqvist. GET IN TOUCH
