Make a Resolution You Can Keep: Resolve to Have a Cleaner Mouth

Almost three-quarters of Americans who set New Year’s resolutions for better fitness abandon those resolutions, according to a Harris Interactive poll. But fitness goals don’t have to be difficult to achieve and the best place to start could be your mouth, say the makers of a natural, iodine-based oral rinse called iClean®.

“There’s a huge and growing body of research linking oral health to overall health,” says Dr. Jeffrey Ebersole, Associate Dean for Research at the University of Kentucky, “and spending a few minutes each day cleaning your mouth is a lot less time consuming than spending hours daily on a treadmill or in a spin class. Of course, the answer is that we all need to exercise more and take better care of our mouths to be truly healthy.”

The Mayo Clinic, for example, says there is an “intimate connection between oral health and overall health” and that your oral health “might affect, be affected by, or contribute to various diseases and conditions,” including:

  • Diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Premature birth and low birth weight

“So, if improving your health in 2015 is one of your resolutions, a few simple daily mouth maintenance tasks could definitely help,” says Dr. John Novak, former professor of periodontics and clinical researcher at the University of Kentucky who has conducted research on iClean.

Here are some simple steps that are easy to do and take only a few moments a day:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride.
  • Use a mouth rinse daily.
  • Floss daily.
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit between-meal snacks, especially candy and soda.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups, at least twice a year if possible.

“Taking care of your mouth isn’t very difficult or time consuming and can save you a lot of discomfort and expense,” says Novak. “Establishing a few simple habits could pay big health dividends.”

The iClean Mouth Rinse taps into the natural cleaning power of iodine to clean your mouth, teeth and gums. iClean is very different from many popular mouthwashes that contain alcohol, heavy mint flavoring, artificial colorants, and a host of unfamiliar chemical ingredients.

Novak adds that “a one-teaspoon rinse once a day, combined with regular tooth-brushing and flossing, will help remove the bacteria that can cause periodontal disease and tooth decay. Getting started now on a simple daily regimen of oral care could pay dividends for a lifetime.”
