Small-cap season and a volatile decade

History is not on the side of those small-cap investors hoping that the "January Effect" will necessarily stretch beyond the first month of the year. Indeed, Mark Hulbert says that though small-cap stocks have tended to outperform their larger-cap peers in January, they then slightly underperform large-cap stocks for the remainder of the year.
